Merced Speedway to Open 2012 With Wider, Longer Track & New Clay
Merced Speedway
in Merced, CA is being transformed for the 2012 racing season, with the track
being widened and made longer. According to an article by Mike Adaskaveg on
Merced Speedway’s Web site, “more than 80 truckloads of clay have been dumped
and spread to change the track from a tight quarter-mile circuit into a
one-third mile oval with wide, sweeping turns. The new surface will make the
track one of the fastest ovals in California.”
“The drivers
begged for a larger, wider track,” said Oval Motorsports President John Soares
in the article. “We listened and we’re giving them the most race-able oval we
can provide,” Soares added.

Other
modifications include the concrete backstretch inside wall being removed to
expand the width of the racing surface, light poles are being moved outside the
track, making for better visibility for both racers and fans alike. In addition, the track is adding new clay that apparently molds and holds its shape better.
The “new” Merced
Speedway opens for practice in March. The biggest race of the year for Merced
Speedway is the return of the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on Friday, March 30.
For 2012,
Merced Speedway will feature weekly racing on Friday evenings.
